As some of you may notice, I like to break our teams down into 3-man fire teams. From my experience, this is the most effective team size for what we do, and is the easiest for team leaders to control during a hectic firefight or cqb situation. There are some pointers I want to cover here, to improve each team’s ability to fight effectively. First, team setup: the three man fire team is designed to move as a slightly staggered delta, i.e. team leader in front, one rifleman behind to his left and the other behind to his right. Spacing is extremely important, as you do not want to be too spread out yet not walking on top of each other. Outdoors I say roughly 15 feet between each person, but indoors and in thick brush you will have to shrink that. Second, fields of fire: we have saying in the military for this, “three halves make a whole”. Think of your surroundings like a giant pie: each member needs to cover one half of that pie, with their halves overlapping each other. The idea behind that is every area of danger outside of your circle now have overlapping coverage by your team members. Third, team leaders: keep control. Organize your spacings, make sure everyone has their field of fire covered, and double check your guys regularly. Ultimately, your team in this configuration is getting plugged into a larger pie with other teams by your squad leader, so make sure you are keeping his job as easy as possible. If he has to organize your guys for you, you are wrong. Questions, comments, or concerns?
